these were in the latest issue of "knits". couldn't resist trying; whoo-hoo; what fun. they took maybe three hours, mostly because i'm not so good at the cable cast on for the waistband part. i used Bernat Cool Crochet; cuz woah...that color i'll be giving them to my younger daughter after she delivers my granddaughter and NO you can't see a pix of her wearing them.

needletart posted in to ask me if i were alright after the storm. I am. the storms were further south. Frightening, to know that a storm can sweep in " 'round midnite", folks wake up to a very different world.
something to think about. our caves are a bit better than they usta be but we are still just an inch or so inside of the great outdoors. remember those commericals? it's not nice to fool with mother nature. Lady, we ain't trying to fool ya'. just trying to stay warm and dry.

i just don't like it that's all. really, i know 48degrees is not that cold, but i just don't like it.
what i do like is my new job. working as customer service for the local bus line. irony, i've been complaining about the local bus service for so long, but now i'm on the other side of the door. making good money and honestly trying to help. feels good when i can.
also, sitting down, i'll be able to knit a little more, read some,and make some new friends. all good, eh?
i'm making my new boss a pair of fingerless mitts. she's a nice lady with sore hands. they are called "twin rib fingerless mittens" i hope you can and will google that. i plan to make the headban from the twin rib also.

I was in a knitting funk
my Mountain Stream was dried up.
my sox were just blah
even my never ending washrag was making me twitchy
not enough time to really concentrate on knitting; time all used up by work and commute. sure I could get in a row or two n the short part of the bus RIDE but most of my time is spend waiting for the next bus and one can't really get out a pattern and spread out while standing at the stop or crowded onto a bus bench, right?
so; back to the basis of all, the one source, the seminal stitch.

while i was kntting out my wait in between bus rides this very morning; a very handsome guy told me his story today. here it is

""my mother taught me to do that when i was a little boy. and you know, she made one red whte and blue blanket; it had big roses on it. a few years ago, just on the weekend when i returned from graduating at the navy, her house burnt to the ground. she told me she couldn't find that one blanket and i went to get my blue suitcase. there was her blanket. she didn't know i had taken it to boot camp with me. it's on her bed to this day. something told me to take that blanket and i'm glad i saved it by stealing it..."
he was talking about crocheting not knitting but who cares? he was handsome, he was smiling, and the story is great.

i got to work ok, and as soon as i got there began to feel sick. i worked long enough to cover fabarics so the fabrics lady could take her break, then i logged out ; put my shoulder bag on, got to the counter and was standing there to tell the fabric lady good night, looked up and there was my brother!
surprise and provicence . a ride home was just what i needed and one more in minute he would have missed me.

can you believe it? the amount of money i have left over from last week's pay check is half the amount i planned to donate to Heifer , out of this weeks paycheck, which i have not yet been paid.
so, that decides the question of what i'm going to do today. i'm going to go to the library; pay the internet users fee of two bucks, which gets me five free printed pages by the way, which will get me some free patterns from somewheres, and today will be a spending less day. so; Cara; my donation will be made on friday. coolness.

it's almost ten o'clock and i'll be going to bed in a little while. read; then sleep, then get up tomorrow and work again. sigh
after the previous post i wanted to come back in and list some things i love to easy me off to sleep and to show y'all that i'm not always that cranky.
i love my cats. yeah, i know i said something ugly about cat fur, but you know...??...
i love the long sunshine of florida days. yea verily, more sunshine makes me happy;even though i'm not what you would call an outdoor person.
i love the nice people i work with. since i began working in the big box there hasn't been one person i haven't liked working with. that goes a long way toward making work bearable, doesn't it?
i love my dvd player. dumb? nope. when i was a kid, dad used to run movies on his projector and show them on our garage door. he, himself, was one of the first kids on his block to have TV in the house. true, they kept it in the basement in case it blew up, but my o my how times have changed.
i love floris perfume. (google them, interesting story)
i love PBAL perfume oils, google them too.
now i'm going to bed, read a little, count my blessings and sleep.

i've been in a snit for weeks, not knitting much, feeling crummy ; all that junk. SO, i've decided to rant.
here goes, turn away if you have a faint stomach, but if you find something you agree with, let me know.
i'm sick of cat hair everywhere, in everything including the ice in the freezer. really. of course i love them but jeeze. there are four of them and only two of us, DD and I; and we just can't keep up.
i'm sick of customers at the store who leave stuff tucked away in hidden spots when they decide they don't really want it. just give that stuff to the check out clerk; PLEASE don't make the floor clerks hunt all over for that little bottle of paint.
i'm sick of dumb questions.
i'm sick of people who talk too much and say nothing,
i'm sick of how long it takes me to get home from work. a week or so ago, on a saturday, i left work at 3 and got home at five thirty. yes, two and one half hours to go a lot less than 15 miles. i ride the bus but spend more time waiting for the next bus than i do actually riding.
thats' not all but now i'm now sick of being crabby and complaining.

faced with a real two day weekend, my first since february when i began working in the big box ; and faced with nothing to do, that's just what i did
nothing
watched about 7 hours of sopranos, watched "basic"; * see joke tacked on the end of this post; played a video game for a few hours, really...hours! no cooking, no cleaning, and only a little porch gardening. no shopping, and only read five pages of "heart of Darkness"
knitting? i can't say i even remember how to. still in a funk since i had a couple of weeks where every knitting thing i touch went wrong. Mountain Stream? still in a lull.
not sure what i need to get me goin'.
i'm sure i don't need to start any new projects. i'm sure i don't need to shop for yarn. i've got books.
i tried MySpace...Wholly boring batman ; tried cupid dot com too. that's a pay service.
i believe it might be time to go to a knitting class. i've seldom seen other people knitting. can you believe that?
now it's your turn. what ever you suggest to get my juices flowing has to be cheap to free, cool to avoid the summer florida heat; and somthing i can get to on the bus.
my first idea is that there is a school with a swimming pool a few blocks away' it will be full of ghetto neighbor hoodchildren, which should make it interesting; specially if i take a break and break out my knitting. hey , maybe i should go somewhere and give lessons for free.

my first real contact with Heifer , other than just hearing the name, was when my Father died. A few days after Father's Day; a few years ago. My GodSister donated to heifer in dad's name. she donated a hive of bees; which is significant because dad was a beekeeper. we were the only kids on the block, in akron ohio mind you; who had bees for pets.
i've offered to send Cara some little prizes to give to donators.

i'm still here;
i've been in a knitting funk; switched to crochet for a minute, made three hats in two days...LOL...
sadly when i began working for the big box retailer i lost three hours a day due to commute time, i come home exhausted and fingering laceweight wool lost it's charm. plus; the actual riding time of the commute is about a half hour and the rest of the time is waiting time, during which i usually can't stitch like i'd like to.

i'm beginning to come back to life just now; i think i can recover, i've cut back on the work at work a bit; still doing my ethical best but not overdoing; the work in the box can never be actually caught up so i try my best to stay just behind the curve of not done. ....gosh ; does what i said even make sense?

meanwhile i'm knitting susan lawrence's baby hat from her blog; and a very old fashioned ruffled baby hat from i can't remember where on the net; and when i come back in to blog again later today or early tomorrow; i have something to say about donating to heifer international

yesterday i had a crochet conversation with an 83 year old woman. she was bright eyed and beautiful. very beautiful. her hair was growing in black again starting at the front!! really, there was about a two inch band of black hair around her face. her son was shopping with her. he said he'd never known her to have any color hair but white. she said she was beginning her third childhood. they had a deep talk which yarn she was going to get. there were five of whatever particular yarn she wanted and she needed six. "because i want six" she said.....LOL... i love my lovely old lady customers. the ones who are past the silliness of the red hat stage and into the transcendent beauty of the threshold.
in thirty years i'll be there. see ya then.

wish i could show ya how cute this is. my Topi is a complete success. i have yet to insert the brim stiffener, need to get one tomorrow, and i think i might use a ready made brim rather than try to trim down plastic canvass. also i changed the ribbing to a twised rib and used an I-cord bind off. i left a nice note for the little sweetie designer, nice hat, nice kid!

a shout out to my daughter-friend Jo for offering me some fiber to spin. Dear Girl, i haven't tried spinning since you showed me "how to" with that bit of coat hanger. i think i'll go forth and make today a day of trying somthings i haven't been able to actuall sucussfully do as of yet, interruped with things i'm rather good at to balance it all.
meanwhile, DD took the digicam back , which is ok cuz it is hers, and so, i'll have just a photo or two more.
this is an afghan i crochet for my queen size bed a few years ago. it spent time in the ufo pile, believe me, probably two years there , i'll just say this , it's BIG! this is the biggest finished object i ever finished ... LOL

today at work i was putting up our first sale bin full of discounted yarn. i was joshing my first sale bin customer;
"do you want me to make that harder for you or easier?" i asked
she said , "i just can't make my mind",
'then let me make it harder for you," i said " because all of these are going to be marked down and if you want any of them i'll sticker them for you!"
turns out, this nice lady, my first sale bin customer, is one of the chapter coordinators for the local "project linus" chapter.

i feel like i'm stuck in that movie.....Blazing Saddles and i'm Mel Brooks...head bobbin...work work work work, work work work work...
don't get me wrong, i like the work, i LOVE the l.o.l. when they come in; little old ladies. they love to talk about their needlework. i sold black aida cloth to a woman who was using it to cross stitch a silverblue horse . wow, makes my eyes hurt to even think of that. i love learning a little bit about the store brand of yarns , a little every day as i work through the stacks counting for inventory and noticing the yarn's content. one of our yarns has 2% spandex. i dreamed that i used it for tube sox? humm...gotta give that a try next time that brand is on sale. i don't love running the register. don't love it, not even a little bit. don't have to do it much but yesterday only three people were there for work. shocking to be on the register for three hours. aarrgh...
now, how the heck do i post pictures on my web site? just tuesday i learned that the cord my daughter uses for her MP3 player also runs the digicam SO...now i can post pictures. Xcept i dunno how.
any advice?

Sunday Morning on CBS is my favorite TV.

i finished a tiny bag with YarnBee Moasic Twist. 36% Polyamide 11% cotton 35% wool 18% acrylic. it'll go into the regular wash later today. maybe it will felt a little? YarnBee is the Hobby Lobby brand. i wanted to work with what i sell. it's soft enough so we'll see how it washes.
note to CatBookMom. i'm not so familiar with Bocelli. i'll give him a listen and get back to ya.

i was at 54 hours when i left work last evening. i'll know next week that as far as my city bus commute, i may as well stay to closing.
now, should i go back to the corner of the couch and Mountain Stream or to the grocery store?

i hit 40 hours when i clocked out for lunch today. funny thing is the owner of the chain was in the store for maybe 20 minutes. that's all ok, the store looks beautiful.
so, here i sit; listening to Josh Groban "Canto Alla Vita" . If he keeps up singing with that beautiful voice i may have to go hunt him down. goodness. wish i understood the language, i guess it's EYEtallian. grobania anyone? he makes me want a new stero.
today's knitting was actually crochet because i needed something i didn't have to count or keep track of pattern wise. just a simple three corner shawl but i plan to work a few repeats of my Mountain Stream before i go to bed.
I had a customer ask me today about blocking her baby blanket. Why do we do that? she asked? she had lessons at JoAnne's but they did not explain why block or how blocking does or does not work on acrylic. i very much enjoy the teaching aspect of my job.
My Son should be here sunday with the cord for the digi cam so .... Photo spoon.

it's a mixed blessing. this moring ten minutes before i should have been on the bus going to work i was still in the water closet (turn away here if you have a delicate nature) on the throne. (no pictures of that are on the way) so ...no work for me today. i needed to be there, i still have stuff off the truck to put away.
on the other hand, i wrapped up my silk, from skein to ball, no tangles no problems. it does have that silk scent, which does not bother me, but it is noticable. i'm guessing the smell will go away after the silk is knitted up and dry cleaned.
also this morning i tried a little cross stitch. haven't stitched in years. the plan is to cross stitch a little lady sitting in the chair cross stitching, i'm using a bookmark , which i will then tuck into the pocket of my work vest. aw...how cute. photos to follow. man oh man does this ever look like beginners work. considering that i haven't stitched in years, it is beginner's work, so there you have it. i'll knit or crochet some nice lace on the edge to make up for the not so neat cross stitching.

i began with the first few stitches of a wrong side row, got to the line of yo that marks the midsection , and then finished with the right side row, either above or below the wrong side row i meant to finish.
so much for talking to co-workers while i knit lace or lace knit, whichever ...
i did however, get my 100% silk unplied purple yarn. ready to go with that you betcha.
and yes, i do have spring fever.

yesterday, near closing time at the store, a nice lady asked me if i knew how to tatt. yes, yes i do. and i showed her . air tatting , having her imagine a bright colored bit of string. she bought three tatting books and the basic coats and clark learn everything book; and a few types of thread. she already has her grandmothers antique tatting shuttle. so, today; i'm going to hunt down my tatting shuttle and see if i do indeed, still remember how to tatt. i was never very good at it, but why should that stop me?
i really like working in a place where i can sell stuff i really like in an honest fashion.
